Yes folks, it was bound to happen. The iPod touch G3 has been taken apart and this tear down reveals and confirms some of my claims, and reveals that Apple lied to us all.
First off, the iPod touch G3 has an FM transmitter/reciever. This can potentially be used to either listen to the radio (like the iPod Nano) or transmit your music to your car’s sterio without the use of another attatchment.
Now FM Radio capabilities have been existant on the iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3G S, as well as the iPod touch 2G. Now, Apple may activate them in iPhone OS 4.0 now that the iPod Nano has that capability. Remember, the iPhone recieved Voice-Control and Shake to Shuffle because the Nano recieved them.
Next up, 802.11n. This is more likely for Apple to activate. The Broadcom BCM4329 chip does have support for 802.11n, The iPhone 3G S doesn’t even have an 802.11n capable chip! Today, 802.11n was finally approved as a standard, so we may see Apple activating this in iPhone OS 4.0 or earlier for a premium. 802.11n is way faster than 802.11a/b/g (which are already supported).
Next, the iPod touch G3 has a 6mm x 6mm x 3mm space between the Broadcom chip and the wireless antenna on the top/center of the board. These dimensions are exactly what the iPod Nano 5G needs for its camera and mic!
Now, I believe that Steve Jobs saw the iPod touch’s camera (the same camera the Nano has) as said that it was a piece of shiznit and to scrap the thing a few weeks before launch. Sad really, I’m sure people wouldn’t care as long as it took video. The iPod touch is big enough to add more hardware for still images.
So there you go guys. Alan & The Press & Sources 1 – 0 for Apple! I still expect a camera and mic on the iPod touch G4 (or G3) sometime before next September. Possibly next Spring or next Summer! Stay tuned for more developments on this!
