The iPhone App Store is a hot market and iPhone customers have lots of decisions to make when choosing iPhone apps. Most of the time we see unique apps, but when it comes to some apps like GPS, it is very hard to differentiate and you have many choices.
I have been reviewing this application for a few weeks because I do not travel to that many locations other than back and forth from my home and work. I have been gradually writing in advantages and disadvantages of their application and before I could finish this review, it looks as though Sygic has improved their application. Now most of the disadvantages will move to advantages.
Sygic has announced a bunch of features that will be implemented into their next release which was submitted to Apple and should be released soon.
New in the update:
▪ Now with text-to-speech – voice guidance announcing the name
of the next street or road.
▪ Choose addresses straight from your iPhone contacts and navigate to.
▪ Music playback fades out smoothly so you can better hear the
voice instructions.
▪ Improved GPS lock, now faster than ever.
▪ Smoother position display as you follow your route.
▪ Increased font size of street names and information bars for
improved readability.
▪ No disclaimer warning message after completion of phone call.
Sygic.
Advantages:
- Automatic recalculation if you miss a turn.
- Very good use of the battery.
- Does not download data because it uses their built in maps.
- has built in extras: World Clock, calculator, unit converter, and country info.
- Speed warnings. If you are going over the set speed that you set it will alert you with an audible warning. This is very useful!
- Other useful alerts such as upcoming railroads.
- Option to choose many different types of voices.
- Auto rotates to what ever position your iPhone is in.
Disadvantages:
- Does not tell you the street name always( I am guessing this will be fixed in an update though)
- GPS takes awhile to lock in and you need to keep your phone close to the window.
- Does not tell you which direction you are going to go such as North or South.
- Spells out some roads which is funny but annoying ex. “Please turn right on C-O-U-N-T-Y H-W-Y 35.” Instead of just saying “Please turn right on County Highway 35.” (Again I am sure this will be fixed in the next update.)
- Has a few bugs I have noticed every now and then when you are on a highway, it quickly shows you a route to get off the highway and back on.
- Some maps are out dated. It was missing a major road that was built in the last few years.
- You are unable to browse your contacts and use the addresses they have.
Overall I am very pleased with Sygic’s offering. Pricing is very competive compared to some of the other larger names in the iPhone Voice Guided GPS market. If you do not have a standalone GPS unit yet, I would recommend you check out Sygic Mobile maps America – Turn-by-Turn Voice Guided GPS Navigation for the iPhone. I will continue to add to this review and now that a new update is out soon, Sygic should be ranked very high in the Voice Guided GPS market for the iPhone!
You can purchase it on the App Store for $79.99
