Currently Apple has stated that YouTube is changing some of its video formats at the moment to make them more compatible with the iPod Touch so most of them cannot be played right now. If you are seeing the message: “This Movie Could Not Be Played” when you try to watch a YouTube video, it will be fixed hopefully soon. You do not need to follow the youtube fix guide to fix the problem. The problem resides on YouTube’s side at the moment.

i used jailbreakme.com and youtube woked fine on monday, so it should just be that they are updating the vids.
Thank you. I couldn’t have played videos on Youtube since this afternoon. I thought my ipod touch or networking has a problem and I tried to fix, restarting several times and resetting all, etc.
Apple should mention at their website before starting all the changes, otherwise people think that their ipods are something wrong. Thank God, I found this information here.

Looks like it is a server side issue — not iPhone, for there are a few videos not yet converted by YouTube you can still watch to test…

Haha, I thought this was all an awful side effect of jailbreakme.com and I just got done restoring, not to mention I was freaking out because the restore “didn’t work.” How I see this and I see I shouldn’t have bothered restoring in the first place. Paranoia gets you nothing but misery and wasted time, I guess.
I was in a similar spot — did a restore on an ISPF unlocked 1.1.1 that ended in not being able to re-activate or jailbreak; so after downgrading to 1.0.2 to get back to 1.1.1 unlocked — discovered YouTube wasn’t working…only to find its a youtube problem.. arg.
i started having the problem a couple of days back. so its quite obvious that htey are updating the vids.
Thank god, I’ve been googling all day, reset the ipod, took off my hacks, etc. Whew! Hope word spreads quickly about this as I’m sure alot of people are sweating. Sheesh. Well, time to reinstall all my cheezy apps. . . . Thank you apple :-\

actully …no. i live in China, and since i got my phone, till today, youtube was blocked here..
today i could connect to youtube via internet, on my PC, and tried it also on my iphone. first time that i see the previews and all, but then i got this message…
just to validate my status -> do people that *dont* have their youtube activated, can see the previews/search/etc… ?

i (think) i tried this one (can you click a link from Safari to the widget? – never tried it..) so im not sure im playing the right one (i just searched my the name of the vid and matched the submitter) – but i got the same error – “Error playing movie”
ok – i searched through the iphone youtube for “Na4×2Uwflmg” and got the video result – but no luck….still get the error..
The 50cents video works fine for me, but the rest doesnt work after the update. I unlocked my phone on Oct30, youtube was working fine on Oct 28 but I didnt check after the 28th.

I used WinSCP to move the 3 files into the folder listed in the article, but it’s still not working.
Ok well I just copied the Activation code from the data_ark.plist and pasted it. I rebooted the phone, and it said I needed to activate. I thought I had messed something up, but when I linked it to ITunes, it reactivated the phone. I guess it’s good I have a locked AT&T phone.
Nir: I also live in China and I’m having the same problem: “error playing movie” when I click on anything but I can search and see bookmarks and favourites etc. Tried playing the 50 cents video and got “error playing movie” once again. Have you figured out what to do yet? I have 1.02 and 03 modem
Bun, Nir, Youtube is actually blocking the access to video when your IP is from China (mainland),
You still can browse video list in Youtube widget.
I went to HongKong without changing anything in my settings and it worked.
blame Youtube or Canada, but not our iPhones/iPod touch… 😀
Jack: thanks for the info. Dang it’s pretty annoying I have to say. I also find it a little odd that I can access youtube and play video on my PC but not on my iphone? (they are using the same wireless router = same IPs)

Attempt at viewing content at video.google.com on PC returns the following message: “Thanks for your interest in Google Video. Currently, the playback feature of Google Video isn’t available in your country. ”
The iPod Touch access to http://www.google.com/m/ always switches to http://www.google.cn/m/ with no way out; regular means of changing the “I am in ” country fail here in mainland China. This is certainly NOT a local switch, this is Google servers at work.
I’m another in China with the ‘Error playing movie’ message. I know YT was previously blocked a few months back but I can view any videos fine on my MacBook, but none whatsoever on my iPhone (in Beijing) via wifi. I actually connect via Ethernet and share the connection over Airport (wifi) so the iPhone has net access via the MacBook, so they’re both using the same connection.

Another confirmation of Google’s love affair with Chinese censors is the fact that the new http://www.google.com/m iPhone/iPod interface does not work in China – URL gets redirected to the old http://www.google.cn/m plain site.

But when i try playing ‘certain’ videos on youtube, it would say ‘error playing movie’. and when i try the video link above, it says the exact same thing. you can’t stream YT from iPod touch because it can only play mp4 format videos but there is a icon on the iPod touch which takes u straight to youtube that will work but if you live in china they block people from conecting, which means that icon on iPod touch won’t work till china allows people to connect. I have a ipod touch and live in china and it sucks not being able to watch vids on youtube

Can anybody play videos now? I have some MPE4 format videos in my ipod touch, and it works fine with V1.1.3. But after I update my ipod touch to 1.1.4, it will show: error playing movie when I tried to view them. Did they change some format stuff in V1.1.4 also?
I have the same problem with youtube. But as a twist, none of the videos on my phone will work either!! It all worked 10 minutes ago!!! Can anyone help. Hi my youtube just went bad. When ever I try to search videos it says cannot connect to youtube so the videos dont load but all of the videos under most viewed, top rated etc show up and I can watch them. My Internet is connected and my connection is strong so I really dont know how to fix it.

go to settings general. Then reset all settings. Once its done then it will all work. It did for me
I’m in the UK and when trying to play a video on YouTube it comes up with error playing movie it’s 23 minutes though if that makes a diffrence
