Are you one of the many people who is having problems with your touchscreen on the iPhone? Hack you hacked your iPhone, unlocked your iPhone, or a non AT&T customer? Now that Apple’s warranty requires you to have an AT&T phone number to get your iPhone replaced or repaired, how do you fix your touchscreen problem?
There are a few options for you at the moment. You can purchase replacement parts, virginize your iPhone and try to return it, or modify your phone even more to try and fix the problem. If you are experiencing a touchscreen issue you can edit the sensitivity of your touch screen to make your iPhone more responsive. You simply need to replace your general.plist file with a modified version found here:
UPDATED:
Modified General.plist and Touch.plist,
updated for FW3.0, tested and working on 2G iPhone.
http://www.zshare.net/download/61836600ca79e240/
http://www.zshare.net/download/618365907ed6a23c/
Placed under:
/var/stash/Applications/Preferences.app/
You will need to overwrite your general.plist located in Applications/preferences.app
The default sensitivity on the iPhone’s touchscreen is 3.5. You have the option to set it from 0-16, where 0 is the most sensitive. Recently I have had a few issues with my touchscreen and applied this modification and everything is working 10x better.
This hack may work for the majority of iPhone users, but there may be a few that will need to replace their LCD completely.
You add the code below to the General.plist:
<dict>
<key>cell</key>
<string>PSLinkCell</string>
<key>label</key>
<string>Touch</string>
</dict>
Yost edited the General.plist file, for people who have a dead strip on the top of the screen, so that the touch option is now on the bottom right under “reset” under pref>general>touch.
(take out the “.” in the link in “rapid”)
heres the link to download it if you have a upper dead strip:
http://ra.pidshare.com/files/7620461…ral.plist.html
1.0.2 firmware General.plist for low dead strip:

1.1.1 firmware General.plist for low dead strip:

WHAT I NOTICED IS THAT BASICALLY THIS MOD DO NOT INCREASE THE SENSITIVITY OF THE TOUCH SCREEN, BUT IT CHANGE THE CALIBRATION.. WHEN .PLIST INSTALLED.. YOU CAN CHOSSE FROM -30 TO 16. IF YOU SELECT 16 NOW THE PART THAT YOU ARE TOUCHING IS NOT WERKING BUT ABOBE THIS PART IS. AND IF YOU SELECT -30 BEHAIND THE PART YOU ARE TOUCHING IS THE ONE THAT WORKS…. SO IF YOU ARE GOING TO RE-CALIBRATE YOUR IPHONE TO GET ACCES TO SOME PARTS TO THE TOUCH THAT DOESENT WORK YOU SHOULD BETTER TRY WHEN THE KYBOARD IS ON.. SO YOU CAN TYPE CORRECTLY.

iphone 2g 2.2.1 one day lower strip icons ipod etc just stopped responding. used post 529 and worked sort of. my slider always worked and still does as well as my lower icons now. however say opening music and then trying to use the lower icons for artist video etc do not work. also lower part of keayboard space bar etc do not respond. any ideas?

Hey Jer, I have the EXACT same problem, did you ever figure it out

JP how to you re calibrte the iphone?
because i have to touch slightly above to type the keys. and its still hard to slide to unlock
JP // Jul 16, 2009 at 2:19 PM
CHRIS, YOU WILL NEED TO DO ALL THE PROSES TO INSTALL THE .PLIST TO THE IPHONE VIA SSH. TRY GOOGLE TO FIND A PROGRAM THAT ABLE YOU TO MANAGE THE IPHONE FROM YOUR PC WITHOUT TOUCHING THE SCREEN OF THE IPHONE. AT THIS TIME I CANT REMEMBER THE NAME OF THIS PROGRAM BUT SEEMS TO BE EZ TO FIND.

CHIRS, JUST WHEN YOU HAVE ACCES TO THE GENERAL SETTINGS THEN TOUCH “SENSITIVITY” . SET THE TOUCH TO: -16 TO SEE IF THIS WORKS FOR YOU AND TRY 1/2 INCH ABOVE TO SLIDE TO UNLOCK . IF NOT YOU MUST HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR SCREEN $$$$

Hi Guys,
After reading and try and try it’s impossible for me to unlock the iphone with the slide bar, after a fresh reboot.
After turning on the phone it always comes into a lock screen to unlock the phone, but I can’t because the bottom isn’t working 🙁
Some other users have asked for the same thing, but the answers didn’t solve my problem.
I have 1 1g 3.0 firmware.
TQT // Jul 25, 2009 at 4:05 PM
Surprisingly, I have 2 iphones with dead strips. The first one with the dead strip at the bottom, solution from Limited Edition iPhone works great.
However the second one with the dead strip in the middle, the line with Call button when you touch keyboard, does not work. I already tried to change the touch value from lowest to highest but the Call button cannot be reached. Thus, I can dial all numbers but can not make a phone call. What should i change?
Is there Any application that help me to input numbers and dial in the upper part?
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
Pritam // Mar 15, 2011 at 1:59 AM
Open the calculator application, type the number, copy it and then go back to dial pad and paste and CALL.

Does this work with a 3.0 firmware ??
TQT // Jul 30, 2009 at 11:36 AM
Yes. It works with FW 3.0. You can download the needed files in post 630 or 639 depended on the dead trip in the top or the bottom of your screen. However, none works with dead trip in the middle.
You may also need to download iphonebrowser software to copy files.

Hey everyone, I really need some help on this one. It appears my iphone has lost touch on only the BOTTOM half of the screen, It is unlocked, and jailbroken first gen, and I put the general and touch files on it with a program, now I just need to get into my iphone to change the settings!
One small problem, I cannot slide to unlock!
Can anyone shed some light on this issue? I see I’m not the only one that has it here, but no one has helped them yet! haha
I really hope someone can help me out with this one.
Is there any way I can edit my iphone settings with a program from my pc?
Another solution I was thinking was to disable slide to unlock, or add the tap to unlock function, but I just cannot do it from my iphone.
Thanks a lot for the help everyone, I hope someone can come up with a solution!
Zack

@Zack
Not sure where I read it. Search the topic again. You can change the position of the slide bar to where you can really touch.
@all
As someone suggested, I reserved an appointment with Apple Genius. After explaining what happened with my iphone. They checked and told me i would get a replacement even when I am out of warranty. WOW. I got a brand new one after few days. (July/2009). I think it’s worth to give a shot.
Fact: i bought iphone from craigslist. unlocked and jailbroken. Due to serial check, my iphone was already out of warranty for almost a year. Before bringing to apple store. I restored to factory settings using iTunes. I used redsn0w 0.72 to activate the phone (not unlock or install icy or cydia). Remember to remove your T-mobile simcard before give it to them.
Zack // Aug 1, 2009 at 6:02 PM
Thanks for the response TQT, but I have read every single post on this thread, and I’m still unable to come up with a solution.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I was thinking of just eliminating the unlock feature, just to get in, but I don’t know how!

Hi,
I have a 2G iPhone running 3.0.1. I restored it using iTunes. I jailbroke it with redsn0w. I replaced General.plist and added Touch.plist to the Preferences folder using iPhoneBrowser.
At this stage I crossed my fingers, rebooted the iPhone and … no luck.
I still can’t get past the “slide to unlock” screen.
The top half of my screen works. I can double click the home button and use the iPod controls to play music. However, I have a dead lower strip and I can’t get past “slide to unlock” to get into settings to change anything.
Went through all the comments on this post thoroughly but no solution is offered!
Please help (by posting a reply).
Thank you.
thehumble1 // Aug 13, 2009 at 7:56 AM
you’re going to have to figure out (or get someone else to) how to make the modification in the file before you upload it to the phone. The general.plist file just gives you the option of modding the sensitivity; it doesn’t make it more sensitive right away.
I don’t know how to look through the plist file properly and even if I did, I don’t think the actual setting is there. I think it’s just the option to show the setting. The actual value is probably in a much more complicated spot and that’s what you need to change.
Unless your phone has physical damage, in which case you might need a new screen or digitizer, which is a PITA to fix.

Hello guys, I had the same problem with my iphone 2g, so what I did, I sent back the iphone to the US (restored obviously), my family over there bought a sim card from AT&T and took it to an apple store, they exchanged the phone (no questions asked) even tough was already out of warranty, but they exchanded it because it’s a known issue, they gave me a refurbished iphone 2g. So it does work, to me, it’s a very good solution, unless you don’t have nobody on the US.

Sam Bernstein // May 20, 2011 at 2:23 PM
I have an Itouch. 3G. After upgrading to 4.3.3 my itouch screen immediately stopped working (all other buttons work, but touch screen does not work at all). I have done 20+ restores, jailbroken it a bunch of times, and done the above fixes, but I am unable to get to the touch menu because I cannot get the phone to unlock (the entire screen doesn’t work). Somewhere 1/2 through my reinstalls, I somehow got iTunes to think that it was an iPhone or an iPad (or some other device – I don’t exactly remember) (some how SHSH validated the install) and the screen started working again with that iOS. However, since it was the wrong iOS, nothing worked so I had to do a restore to the iTouch 4.3.3. After doing that restore (and ever since) the touch screen still doesn’t work. I am 99.9% sure that this is a firm ware problem (I think that Apple may have intentionally broken iTouch 3G compatibility in their firm ware by defaulting sensitivity to 16 so that you either have to pay for a ‘repair’ or buy a new one, since almost all iTouch 3Gs are out of warranty). Does anybody know where the setting for sensitivity is stored on the iTouch 3G in 4.3.3? I have a hex editor and know how to use it, but without knowing where the sensitivity is stored, I have no way of knowing which file to modify.
Also, does anybody have a iTouch 3G with 4.3.3 that is still working? (Model A1318)
FYI, my digitizer is in good condition (i’ve replaced them before on other iPhones and looked at mine and it ‘appears’ fine (aka it is still connected) – I am pretty sure this is firm ware related because I didn’t even touch my iPod while updating it and as soon as the firm ware updated, I had this problem)
