Are you one of the many people who is having problems with your touchscreen on the iPhone? Hack you hacked your iPhone, unlocked your iPhone, or a non AT&T customer? Now that Apple’s warranty requires you to have an AT&T phone number to get your iPhone replaced or repaired, how do you fix your touchscreen problem?
There are a few options for you at the moment. You can purchase replacement parts, virginize your iPhone and try to return it, or modify your phone even more to try and fix the problem. If you are experiencing a touchscreen issue you can edit the sensitivity of your touch screen to make your iPhone more responsive. You simply need to replace your general.plist file with a modified version found here:
UPDATED:
Modified General.plist and Touch.plist,
updated for FW3.0, tested and working on 2G iPhone.
http://www.zshare.net/download/61836600ca79e240/
http://www.zshare.net/download/618365907ed6a23c/
Placed under:
/var/stash/Applications/Preferences.app/
You will need to overwrite your general.plist located in Applications/preferences.app
The default sensitivity on the iPhone’s touchscreen is 3.5. You have the option to set it from 0-16, where 0 is the most sensitive. Recently I have had a few issues with my touchscreen and applied this modification and everything is working 10x better.
This hack may work for the majority of iPhone users, but there may be a few that will need to replace their LCD completely.
You add the code below to the General.plist:
<dict>
<key>cell</key>
<string>PSLinkCell</string>
<key>label</key>
<string>Touch</string>
</dict>
Yost edited the General.plist file, for people who have a dead strip on the top of the screen, so that the touch option is now on the bottom right under “reset” under pref>general>touch.
(take out the “.” in the link in “rapid”)
heres the link to download it if you have a upper dead strip:
http://ra.pidshare.com/files/7620461…ral.plist.html
1.0.2 firmware General.plist for low dead strip:
http://ra.pidshare.com/files/6058341…ral.plist.html
1.1.1 firmware General.plist for low dead strip:
upgrade to 2.1 and most likely the settings will be lost, but you can jailbreak 2.1 and put them back.
What to do if my firmware is 2.1?
thank you ! you saved my iphone
How can I do… if I have firmware 1.1.4
Thanx, what did you do, I have 2.1 as well. Is there .plist for this firmware.
I have same problem with my iphone 1.0.2 the lower part of phone has stopped working.I replaced the mentioned file n reduced the sentivity to 0.0 but still my lower keys are not working….what is the solution brother?
Had the lower dead strip problem….bought it off ebay in that condition. Took it to the Apple Store. and they exchanged it at no cost!! Awesoem!!
Andres: yes, there is a Touch.plist and General.Plist on the 2.1 version. Those files are on the same path I mentioned on post 272.
Fabs:
I spent more than a week trying to fix an error I got while trying to update the iphone to 2.1 firmware.
What I did WRONG: I had itunes 7.7.1.11 and I updated to itunes 8.0 when I used the pwnage tool I used with itunes 7.7.1.11 and firmware 2.0.1 I couldn’t, itunes 8.0 didn’t allow me to use the custom restore file. I downgraded to itunes 7.7.1.11 and my nightmare begun. Whenevr I connected the iphone, I got the error “itunes was unable to load dataclass information from sync services. reconnect or try again later”. When I tried to upload the custom restore file, I got the error 1600 on itunes. Well, I must have checked a hundred web sites, all of them with non sense solutions but no one of them worked actually (they were non sense, but I tried them all).
This is how I FIX IT:
-upgrade itunes to 8.0 or 8.01
-Download the 2.1 firmware
-Download the bootloadres 39 and 46.
-download pwnage tool for 2.1 firmware. Open the .dmg file, but DON’T open the tool. Drag the icon to the Applications folder, once it’s there, now double click the icon.
-Last step before starting the process to unlock the iphone: go to itunes and restore the iphone with the official 2.1 firmware file from itunes. Then unlock the iphone with the pwnage tool.
For a more detailed procedure, please follow the instructions included on this site. Make sure to follow ALL the steps.

Guys, can any kind souls please upload post#272’s Touch.plist and General.plist files on mediafire? Thanks in advance!
I’m having 2G, running 2.1 version..
The lower portion of the screen seems to be dead…
I cannot press CALL, + and X buttons on the dialer screen.
Any solution for that?
N-Aparicio
I updated to iTunes 8.1.
Downloaded & restored with firmware 2.1 from Itunes.
Now I have a working iPhone 2.1!!!!
That is all It takes.
Now this is only HALF of the BOOTIE! Cydia and Installer are missing since the 2.1 firmware did a clean install.
NOTE: For those of you reading this post be aware that I did this updated from an already pwn 2.0.1 iPhone. Apparently Apple lost interest in re-locking or worse – BRICKING iPhones therefore a simple update with iTunes 8.1 from a previously pwned iPhone – does the trick! If you need more control over your iPhone then I suggest you follow N-Aparicio’s post 309 – “This is how I FIX IT” and you should be fine.
Dead strip:
For those of you with dead strip, see post 298. Apple is replacing iPhones with dead strips!!! Just make sure you put your iPhone to it’s original state including the ATT sim and take it to the Apple store. Your iPhone at this point should ONLY be able to make 911 calls. This is important as the associate will ask you “what’s wrong with your phone?” Then you “slide to unlock” and point out that you cannot use the bottom part of the phone to make a call. Also, you tell him/her that you did the RESTORE thinking that it was going to fix the problem but apparently it did not work. Then, by magic – 15 minutes later you’ll have a refurb iPhone. Mine got exchanged after the warranty ran out. Please, let me know if this worked for you as it did for me 🙂
Hey I put that general.plist onto my iPhone and put the touch setting to 0 (most sensitive). Then I restarted my iPhone… the slider to a while to slide… the touching worked for a few seconds, then it froze for a few seconds and went to the default lock-screen and says that some error happened and the iPhone goes to Safe-Mode and it still doesn’t work. I tried switching the general.plist back to the old one (which I backed-up) and it does not change anything. HELP PLEASE!
Changing the general.plist and touch.plist did not make changes to my Iphone. I guess my problem is a bit different cause actually the screen is working BUT – I can answer the calls and start using the phone only by following the procedure – if I receive a call, I mute it and then press home button, after some seconds the screen switches off and after pressing home button again, I can “slide to unlock” and answer the call. Very often I have to call back cause the caller loses patience of waiting.
The screen is not totally dead the first time after longer pause, cause when starting ipod by double-clicking home button, I can push “play” but not from the location it is on the screen, but on top of “fwd”, and it starts working.
Long story – hopefully mostly understandable, solution for this? Thanks in advance
to: Fabs
will it work even if I have t-mobile?
Tim:
Yes, that is what I currently have.
What Fabs said in #313… see the link in 298.
and what I did in #307. Do exactly as he said. Restore to original and take it in to an Apple store and show them whats wrong. They replaced mine with no questions asked. The paperwork even came back with the guys name on it who I bought it off of Ebay. They didnt even blink an eye. Although one word of caution. They will only replace it IF you are an AT&T customer and it has the SIM card in it. There was a woman next to me who brought her husbands iPhone in with a problem, but they wouldn’t do anything with it because there was no SIM card installed. So that would be the only downside to the exchange. But if you are already an AT&T customer it will work for you.
Hello!
I found that when you have an iPhone with the dead lower row and iTunes saves your settings, it also saves the mods done in the touch.plist and the general.plist.
So when I upgraded that iPhone from 1.2 to 2.1 with the last Pwnage Tool on a Mac, it already had the touch sensitivity setting on place… It is a good way to update your iPhone with mods… because they does not disappear.
1- Backup with iTunes (on Sync)
2- Upgrade with iTunes to new SW version from Apple.
3- Use the latest Pwnage Tool to make a customized update file to jailbreak and/or unlock.
4- Connect to iTunes to recover all your things and hacked touch settings.
😀
The “return it clean to apple’ for a refurbished model is a great plan except if you are 1 of the 1/2 million folks who apple sold a 1st gen iphone to, for use outside of the att or the states.
I got one with dead strip at the bottom from 1.1.1. now upgraded to 2.1 via Pawnage. Still the dead bottom strip is there.
It seems like Apple is playing deaf and blind on this worldwide iPhone problem and no intention of solving it.
Thanks to Limited Edition Iphone for starting this very informative thread and the others who unselfishly shared their time, effort, talent to help people they did not even know.
How widespread is this problem, really?
I am from the Philippines, btw. 😀
I hope that Zibri and the others can work a work-around on this like including the edited general.plist and touch.plist automatically installing in iPhones with dead strips.
Though can’t make Ziphone 3.0 to work on my iPhone.
Zibri and Ziphone? Dont make me laugh.
Can’t get my iPhone quickpwned to v2.1 to resolve my bottom dead strip after copying the general.plist and touch.plist to var/preferences/.
I used iPhone Browser and it works great like Windows Explorer. Better than WinSCP.
What did I miss? I can’t get the slider to come .
Thank you.
WOW! At last, i was able to bring back to life the bottom dead strip of my iPhone 2.1.
I used iPhone Browser, went to applications/preferences, renamed General.plist and Touch.plist, just in case, and pasted the two files (from Mike, #99: Thanks a bunch, man!).
My setting at -10 worked, but have to touch a bit higher to the left for the touch to be effective.
I tweaked the General.plist by transferring the
cell
PSLinkCell
label
Touch
below ‘About’ to make it appear higher and not below the non-responding screen.
You need to play around the slider setting to find the one where you can activate all the buttons on the bottom part of the screen.
Now, I do not have an expensive paperweight anymore!!!
Thank you, Mr, LEi and all the rest here! You are all great!
😀
Tried it out on my iphone 2g. It does work, but you have to touch the keys higher than normal. Decided to sent it back and have it repaired by Apple since it is still under warranty.
Eventhough, hanks a bunch you all!
Hi my problem is same as yours i have dead stripe on 4,5,6 row…But the interesting thing is that when i’m putting my iPhone in out of box condition everything works well….So please help me i allready read all the posts but i can’t figure out is anybody having a same problem as me….THX in ADVANCE……P.S. Is there any chance that somebody can put all this touch preference on some of the repo’s on Cydia or Installer so we can just install it and the touch sens option will show in settings???

Awesome! I was able to get my old iPhone working again! I jailbroke it using QuickPwn 2.1, but was unable to get wireless working since I could not click on the “Join” button in the wireless settings. I was able to use iBirckr to upload the General.plist and modified Touch.plist. from post #160. After I played around with the Touch settings under Settings/General/Touch, I was able to get the bottom strip working again. Thanks!

Hi,
I would consider my self a “noob”. So I am not sure really how to do the instructions outlined above but what happened is my iphone dropped and now the top half of the screen does not work. Someone above uploaded a a custom ipsw but the problem was that the sensitivity was set to -15 and i need -20.. it would be great if someone could make a custom ipsw with the following settings:
– set root partition to 1024GB
– enabled baseband update (if needed)
– enabled bootneuter unlock
– auto-install of OpenSSH and OpenSSL
– auto-install of Cydia and Installer
– auto-install of modified General.plist and Touch.plist
– set touch sensitivity to -20
– disabled ‘Show Touch’ in Touch.plist
– modified boot and restore icon in colored Apple logo (so you know my firmware has been installed).
Thanks to martijn for that ipsw but i just need this little tweak for the top half of my screen to work.
Thanks to anybody for there help and hopefully someone can post the rapidshare link with the ipsw very soon!!!!
Can someone please write a simple tutorial on how to accomplish installing this on a 2G phone , with the bottom dock being the dead strip, using windows?
i need help with my iphone the bottom half of my screen wont work is there anyway i can fix it?
please help me i love my phone
Can someone let me know if my instructions below as posted in #160 still work on iPhone 2.2? I have since sold my dead strip phone, but would like to know for future reference.
Thanks,
😐
PS. This were instructions for bottom dead strip.
PPS. If anyone needs more help with this, I can offer some help at random times on MSN Messenger at audiophile_8 [at] hotmail [dot] com (replace [at] with @ and [dot] with .)
Download the following files:
http://rapidshare.com/files/110285879/General.plist.html
http://rapidshare.com/files/110286136/Touch.plist.html
Open the Touch.plist file with TextEdit or some other text editing software; Notepad will probably work.
Find where it says:
min
0.0
Replace the “0.0″ with “-20.0″ without the quotations. Save the file.
If you have just restored your iPhone, make sure it’s jailbroken and the Installer program is available on the home screen. Enable Wifi and connect to your wireless internet. I had to disable my router’s password temporarily because I had no access to the “Join†button. Open Installer and if, like me, you can’t press the little buttons along the bottom, click any of the featured apps on the front page. Once it opens the next screen, click on the top-most left hand button to go back to the main packages screen.
Now, go to the “System†category and select and install “BSD Subsystemâ€. After the installation, from the same category, install “Open SSHâ€. Once complete, exit Installer and go back into your wifi settings page where your networks are listed. Click on the little blue arrow to the right of your connected network and note the IP address (ex. 102.168.1.104). It is essential that after this point, the iPhone does not go to sleep, because once it wakes, its IP address may be different than before.
This part requires an FTP transfer program capable of connecting to an SSH enabled server for file transfer. I know for a fact that Cyberduck on Mac OSX does this and for free, but on Windows I’m not sure. I will give directions for Cyberduck:
Once in the program, select “Open connection†from the bar at the top. Change “Protocol†to “SFTP†(SSH File Transfer Protocol). Then type in the IP address of the phone you noted earlier, and use username: root and password: alpine. It will take a little while to connect at first, and it may even fail the first time. Try again and it should work. It will give a message about some keys, but in all cases always “allowâ€.
You will now be presented with a file structure. We need to move up to the main root of the phone’s filesystem. In the drop-down box just above the file structure it should say something like “/var/…†Click this drop-down menu and select “/â€. This is the root of the phone’s file structure. You will be presented with a new list of folders. Find “preferences.app†and expand this folder. Now, drag each of the files you downloaded into the program onto “preferences.appâ€. For each files you should get a file transfer dialog, and a notice that you will be replacing the old file with your downloaded one. Accept this at all times.
Now. Close the FTP program. Go back to your iPhone. Go to Settings -> General -> Touch (New menu item). You should be presented with a screen that allows you to move a slider to increase the sensitivity. The smaller the number, the more sensitive.
I think the spacebar may the lowest object on screen that is absolutely necessary to have access to, so adjust the slider and check it in the SMS section until you can comfortably press the spacebar. I had to go down to around -14. This means that now I have to press slightly above the buttons at all time on the screen, but it is easy to get used to.
Of course, I meant iPhone 2.1 =)
Disregard my previous post.
My original question was if my instructions in #160 are still valid.
Thanks
Hi,
I subscribed this article followup to see for interestings news, because it heled me so much.
After several months I received only news about people too lazy to read and always asking someone else to help…
So, Kudos to the real contributors and shame on too lazy people.
PS : I know this comment should be classified as spam as well, but I need to express myself!
I have some other problem, my screen just go off and it takes several minutes even ours just to come back….while it I can’t use the phone maybe if I have earphones I can answer calls but that’s all….what can I do..?
sorry in the last post I mean …HOURS..
THANKS
anybody know the location of general.plist and touch.plist in firmware 2.1??
I am using iBricks and it has helped me before I upgraded. Now the Applications/preferences.app is not available. The application folder is not accessible?
Have these files been moved someplace else?
its under /var/stash/Applications/Preferences.app/
so i was able to get the two files on to my iphone. restarted it and was anxious to see my iphone come back to life.. however the damn dead strip still didn’t get fixed!.. is there any other solution for this issue?
Hey folks,
first thanx to all the contributers on this page you did a damned good job..
Maybe u can solve my problem, I am on a lower dead strip, restored phone with “martijns” .ipsw (see post 248) and it worked ( while booting I can see the coloured apple logo) but then it shows me unlock button for pin or home screen edit button and i can’t unlock or discard cause its in the unresponding part of the touchpad…
is there a chance to transfer the unlock button to top or rotate the display ?!!
Thanks in advance
HenBeck
Hi Guys,
First, thanks for all your posts. I read lots of solutions presented here and i think that they can be helpful in my case.
I dropped my 1G 2.1 Firmeware Iphone on the floor and its touch screen stop working…i just can’t “slide to unlock” the home screen when my iphone starts!
Now i want to apply one of the solutions presented here but i can’t activate WIFI on my iphone coz its touch screen is completly IRresponsive!!!!!
Maybe i’m missing an episode of this conversation but i can’t figure out how to activate WIFI and get my IPHONE ip adress since all the surface of its screen is disabled!!!
Please help me.
I have successfully used QuickPwn on my 2.1 1st gen iPhone (with the dead bottom-half screen). I’ve been able to replace the General.plist file. However, before I can access the General/Touch config, the “Waiting for activation” screen pops up. Of course, I cannot tap the dismiss button, because my screen hasn’t yet had sensitivity altered.
What do I need to do to “activate” my phone? Thanks.
