Apple’s Official firmware release site can be found here, but it can be very hard to understand for the average user. I have extracted all of the firmware links and arranged them in their proper categories below. So if you have the original iPhone, download firmware from the 2G iPhone list. If you have the iPhone 3G, download the firmwares from 3G iPhone list. Lastly if you have the iPhone 3G S, download the firmware from the 3GS iPhone list.
If you need or want to downgrade your firmware on your iPhone you can get them here:

Is there a way to install a previous firmware version onto the iPhone?
When I will receive mine, it’ll probably come loaded with 1.0, however I am worried that by that time, a newer version than the current 1.0.2 is available, which will probably not work with the current SIM unlock tools.
Is there a way to force iTunes to install the current 1.0.2 files, and not check for the latest version online?
Thanks.
Limited Edition iPhone // Sep 20, 2007 at 12:33 PM
yes you will be able to install 1.02. If you just ordered yours it will most likely ship with 1.02. My brother ordered his last week and it was 1.02
Jorg // Sep 20, 2007 at 3:03 PM
Hi, and thanks for your prompt reply.
Yes, chances are that 1.02 is in the device already, but I just wanted to make sure I was able to roll-back, in case a SIM-hack for the 1.1.x will take some time.
So HOW exactly can I install a user selectable firmware version? Does iTunes allow me to choose a file?
Limited Edition iPhone // Sep 20, 2007 at 3:44 PM
…. I think you download the file. Rename it to a .zip and extract the files and then transfer them to the iPhone using your favorite method.
Nick Dale // Sep 21, 2007 at 11:43 AM
So if I downgrade the firmware on an unlocked phone will it remove the sim unlock so that it is properly back to manufacturers settings… i.e. locked to AT&T??
Limited Edition iPhone // Sep 21, 2007 at 1:25 PM
you do not need to downgrade. You can do a virgin restore. Read this post. https://limitededitioniphone.com/how-do-i-restore-my-iphone-to-factory-virgin-state/
Jorg // Sep 21, 2007 at 4:18 PM
Yes, but at point 8 it says that you have to perform a restore in iTunes. At that point, it’ll probably download the latest firmware version online.
My question is: If the iPhone is at 1.0, and an 1.1.x firmware is availble trough iTunes, how can I install the current 1.0.2 version on it?
Andy // Sep 23, 2007 at 1:16 AM
i would love to know the answer to this question….i have searched all over and there seems to be no way to downgrade or update the firmware with iTunes……any help would be great…thanks
Andy // Sep 23, 2007 at 1:18 AM
Correction **without using iTunes.
Limited Edition iPhone // Sep 23, 2007 at 1:31 PM
there is a way to update to the latest firmware without iTunes. As soon as I find out the exact way to put an old firmware on the iPhone I will post it here
Alveia // Sep 26, 2007 at 6:32 AM
Try hold the shift and the restore botton, iTunes will show you the firmware you want restore.
Andy // Sep 27, 2007 at 2:18 PM
I’m standing by………thanks in advance.
hatsof // Sep 27, 2007 at 5:03 PM
hats off to alveia…
Mauricio Pastrana // Sep 27, 2007 at 5:51 PM
Ditto… Alveia’s method works great in itunes for windows (perhaps i have an older version in my mac?) … just download the firmware to your desktop and shift+restore will let you choose where to update from. voila!
phew a couple hours worth of search, ended up here!

Hmm… We have seemed to brink our iPhone without unlocking it. We did install some of the apps… but not any unlocking. After we installed the firmware update … it will not connect to iTunes. Any suggestions … besides buying a new iPhone?
Limited Edition iPhone // Sep 28, 2007 at 12:29 PM
If you modified your iphone in any way we recommend not to update the firmware until it is confirmed safe. The iPhone Dev Team is working a solution. If you are an AT&T customer you can go to your local store and request a new sim to activate your phone. If you are not a customer then try to restore it to a virgin setting and then try to exchange it at the apple store.

hello..is there any hope for unlocking or downgrade iphone v 1.1.1??
Limited Edition iPhone // Sep 29, 2007 at 11:49 AM
You cannot downgrade if you have already upgraded just wait until the dev team finds a soution or try to talk with att or apple. When you mod anything you must always wait for a new firmware to be confirmed safe
Modmyiphone // Sep 29, 2007 at 12:51 PM

you will need to downgrade to 1.1.1 by downloading firmware 1.1.1 and holding down shift(pc) or option(mac) and press restore.
Then follow this guide: https://limitededitioniphone.com/easy-upgrade-from-unlocked-111-to-unlocked-112-firmware/

hey man Im thinking of buying an iphone at an apple store can i still get the old firware installed when i buy the phone?
Limited Edition iPhone // Dec 6, 2007 at 9:16 AM
If you buy an iPhone from the apple store now it will be version 1.1.2, which is unable to be unlocked at the moment. If you are going to use it with ATT then you can downgrade to another firmware.
