If you are getting error (1) or error (6) while downgrading the firmware, you need to put your iPhone in DFU mode before you can restore or downgrade the firmware.
Step 1. Turn off your iPhone.
Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.
Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.
Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that its in restore mode.
Alternative Method:
Step 1. Connect iphone to USB then listen to the sound when it connect and disconnect.
Step 2. Hold the home and power buttons until hear the disconnect sound then release power button.
Step 3. Wait until you hear another sound then release home button.
Alternate Method: Going Into DFU Mode Without Button Pushing: (on windows) Easier than timing the buttons just right!
1.) First download the required archive http://www.sendspace.com/file/93fx93
2.) Extract the archive to the root of your hard drive, should be C:/DFU/
3.) Connect your iPhone and ignore iTunes
4.) Goto Start – run
5.) Next type in “c:/dfu/dfu iBSS.m68ap.RELEASE.dfu”
6.) Wait for iPhone to show a “white” screen
7.) Now you may proceed to downgrade!

I have two 3g 16gb’s I was able to enter DFU mode easily by all of the above methods on one of the phones but on the other phone none of them will work. I’m not able to enter recovery mode either. I am currently on FW 3.1.3.
Do you have any suggestions?

HEY guys , good news i took my iphone 3gs to the apple store, i was stuck in recovery mode, and had a non working power button, they took the sim tray out put the serial into a hand/credit card machine iphone and swaped it out for free. They gave me a brand new 3gs, 3.1.2 firmware, now i can ssh to SAURIK or CYDIA’S server, and jailbreak….. “NEW UPDATE”…. To take out of RECOVERY or DFU mode and boot up normal on any firmware including 4.0, 4.01, 4.1 simply download BLACKRA1N, install to 32 bit C:/Program Files/Common Files/Apple/Apple Application Support
Part 2: On a 64bit install to C:/Program Files/Common Files/Apple/Apple Application Support all the files that is needed for Blackra1n are in the folder, Blackra1n should start and run perfect.
Now to get your Iphone to boot normaly, plug in your Iphone, exit out of itunes, open Blackra1n until you see the MAKE IT RAIN box button but dont do anything at this moment, now hold the power button on the iphone until it powers off then let go, at this point the iphone will power on by itself, as it is powering on press the MAKE IT RAIN button, UNPLUG the USB cord from the iphone and the iphone will then REBOOT into a normal Phone…
I thought it was hopeless. I tried multiple methods on multiple message boards. Then I tried the first method above and held that Home sucker down the entire time. I can’t believe it, IT WORKED! May the gods smile upon you.

Okay, i wanted to get the acier theme but i need five-column springboard for that, i got it but its from xsellize and the tweak Fcsb putted my iphone into safety mode for like a week (I couldnt uninstall and still cant) i went into ifile and deleted some stuff of there and it was set back. Oh i forgot to say the fcsb from xsellize doesnt work. I really want the acier theme so i tried to donwload fcsb its for free now. it says trying to overwrite some stuff like library/mobilesubstrate/…….. I went into ifile and deleted some stuff tried to uninstall the fcsb but it didnt work. so when i tried to respring my device it just loaded for like 5 minutes then i rebooted and now i cant turn on my iphone, it loads for like 4-5 minutes then it starts over what should i do? dont want to restore.
