If you are getting error (1) or error (6) while downgrading the firmware, you need to put your iPhone in DFU mode before you can restore or downgrade the firmware.
Step 1. Turn off your iPhone.
Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.
Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.
Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that its in restore mode.
Alternative Method:
Step 1. Connect iphone to USB then listen to the sound when it connect and disconnect.
Step 2. Hold the home and power buttons until hear the disconnect sound then release power button.
Step 3. Wait until you hear another sound then release home button.
Alternate Method: Going Into DFU Mode Without Button Pushing: (on windows) Easier than timing the buttons just right!
1.) First download the required archive http://www.sendspace.com/file/93fx93
2.) Extract the archive to the root of your hard drive, should be C:/DFU/
3.) Connect your iPhone and ignore iTunes
4.) Goto Start – run
5.) Next type in “c:/dfu/dfu iBSS.m68ap.RELEASE.dfu”
6.) Wait for iPhone to show a “white” screen
7.) Now you may proceed to downgrade!
**also these files are found in ibrickr’s directory except for the .dfu file**

Great work Keep it up. I NEED HELP! I was able to get into DFU mode and down grade my iphone. I also managed to restore it. Now the message on my itune window is “Sim card does not seem to be supported” Please help. I live in Sri Lanka and iphones are still not officially launched.
I am in the same boat – HOME button doesn’t work on my iPod touch 1G (fw221). Haven’t tried the DFU tool on this site yet, but doesn’t seem like it works on any of the newer firmwares.
Please advise if you find out something that works to put device in DFU mode relying on the HOME button

is there a way to use the “no button” method on the 3.0 firmware? My home button is broken, so i can not get it into DFU for jailbreaking. I tried iliberty, ziphone and the other apps out there, but neither did get me to DFU. Please let me know if anyone finds a method for the 3.0 firmware that works. I am stuck here

I have an 8gb iPhone 3G. Last night I was talking on Palringo with some buddies and one of them sent an insanely large image which hung at 99% and then when it finally loaded, everyone’s text messages started spamming me and about 5 seconds later it said “No Service” at the top left. A couple seconds after that it kicked me to the “Restore Needed” screen with the usb cable/itunes image. I tried downloading the 3.0 update and restoring but it said “The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occured (23).”
I’m iPhone stupid so step-by-step instructions on how to fix this $400 paperweight would be greatly appreciated.
None of these steps work, it just hangs on the apple logo screen. These phones cost to much to not work properly and apple support is just horrible.

hey, i got an iphone 2g that was unlocked, let a friend borrow the phone, he thought he was doing me a favour and upgradded it, now its locked to 3.0.1 firmware.
my sleep or wake button dont work so cant get into dfu mode that way, i tried ziphone and it just says its not responding when it try’s to run it.

Hey, I got the same problem with you. All you do is go to DFU mode then restore your iphone. Then Jailbreak it. It should only take you atleast 30 mins to do all this. For jailbreaking use redsnow then to unlock to any carrier is ultrasno)w

i have new latest 32gig 3GS iPhone and i have a problem like, my phone dosent wants to turn up, when ever connected to the computer it pop up’s, phone detected in recovery mode. trying to restore the phone it gets stuck on verifying iPhone restore. it dosent go ahead of that, i have kept it in that position for more then 12hrs. Still it dosent wants to start up. when i pull off the data cable it turns off.

you dont have to download dfu. you can dfu mode your iphone. Check in youtube, there should be a lot of video tuturial there.

Joe, I tried all these things, still I have the same problem it does not gets restored it hangs on verifying restore with iPhone, I kept it for 24 hours, still there it self, pluged off the cable, power gone n dosent ants to start up the screen, do u have any way out of dis?
I think when I did this with 3.0, I simply unplugged and plugged back in at light speed and that kicked it back in gear.

This doesnt help you downgrade the OS because even in restore mode, iTunes still simply installs the newest OS 3.1.
Any ideas how to install a lower OS? I have 3.1 but I want 3.0
I did restore mine again but mine is iphone 3g. What i know, if you got iphone 3gs you wont be able to downgrade to lower version. Ive been following Dev-team who always got unlocking for iphones.

Redsnow is to jailbreak your iphone using redsnow which download cydia installer. Then in cydia where you download the ultrasnow to use your phone to any carrier. Rule of thumb, before restoring to new software make sure that the current software can be unlock or else you get stuck to it.

jailbreaking the iPhone is easy with Pwnage. Unlocking is not possible if you have an 0508 baseband.
With 3.0 firmware I use redsnow to jailbreak then ultrasnow from cydia to unlock. All the work in under 30 mins.

just update your phone to 3.1
Once you upgrade to 3.1 you can use it using at&t but you cannot unlock to other networkl. If you have other carrier you have to wait until dev-team find away to unlock the firmware 3.1.

I think I bricked my iphone 2G using this method to get into DFU mode. Here is what I did, please let me know what I am doing wrong so that others can learn from my mistake too. In the beginning, I could use my T-mobile SIM card with my iphone 2G to make outgoing calls and receive calls, which was not unlocked yet because iTunes said that it is an unsupported SIM card. At this point, I am not sure if this iphone has been jailbroken before, but maybe it has since I cannot see any apps when it was turned on. I could not get my iphone into DFU mode using the sequence of Power and Home Button instructions I found on youtube. I want to use Redsn0w to jailbreak my iphone 2G, so I downloaded iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw and used iTunes to restore this image to my iphone. After this I was not able to turn off the iphone or see any apps other than the iTunes and USB cable on the screen at this point. I tried many ways to turn off my iphone but without success. I tried all the help that I could find using google and youtube. so my desperate plan was to let the battery drain and I can try to jailbreak my iphone again after I recharge it. I am posting this because my iphone won’t charge or turn on when it is plugged to a power adapter or via usb connection to a powered-on computer. So is there any iphone expert out there that can tell me how to recover from this state or what I did wrong to brick my iphone 2G. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. I cannot get it repaired by iphone, because it is old and I am not the original owner. I got this from a friend who brought it from ebay.
When you see that apple itune and USB cable meaning you are in DFU mode already. After your iphone in that state. PLug it in in your computer and Itunes should read it. Once itunes read it. Press shift restore and download iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw (if this the right one for your iphone) then follow the instruction to jailberak it using redsnows. Make sure you just install cydia and not icy. Once you get done jailbreaking. You go cydia and install ultrasn0w (o is zero not O). After you download ultrasnow, you should be able to use any sim card.
P.S. As far as I know this work in Firmware/software 3.0. I dont know if this works in the new Firmware 3.1. The latest I know that you can use firmware 3.1 and you can still jailbreak and unlock except for iphone 3GS. SO please check it firt before installing firmware 3.1. I wanna help you more but I have to write some reports for my patients. good luck.

I took it in the to shop and the guy said my home button is screwed thats why the button method didnt work and to get the button fixed its gonna cost more than a new itouch…so i’m hoping this method will at least get it restored so i can still listen to music on it
in what state is your ipod right now? you should be able to just click restore in itunes.
its says its disabled…i bought it like that and my itunes just says its got a password on it u cant access itunes without a code and the touch just say connect to itune… i didnt no the home button wasnt working…the ad said disabled itouch $150 so i thought i could get it fixed but i tried the buttons didnt work and took it to the shop and they said its the home button thats y…so just tryn to get it undisabled 4 music so its not a complete waste of $150
Hey! look at DFU mode in youtube. Then go to itunes download the latest firmware. Then use Blackrain. its very easy. look it up black rain at youtube. you should unlocked your phone in notime
OMG will this method work on my itouch? it’s been disabled cant do anything and when i connect it to itunes it gives me a error message “you cant not connect to “Steve’s ipod” cause there’s a password, please enter the password to access itunes. it gets worse my home button is not working so i cant do the dfu restore. thats new to me. If thats your own ipod that you bought brand new. You should be able to sync it with itunes.
