Low Volume On Your iPhone?: Steps To Fix

October 10th, 2007 by Limited Edition iPhone · 91 Comments

iPhone Volume Fix

Have you unlocked your phone and noticed that the volume is very low? Audio has been a problem on the iPhone up until firmware v 1.1.1 which apple seemed to address in the update, but not everyone is able to upgrade to 1.1.1 yet. Below is a guide to increase your volumes just like the 1.1.1 firmware update.

Things you’ll notice:
1). DialPad is louder
2). Speaker, Ringtone, Headset, Receiver, Speakerphone volumes are noticeable.
3). System Sounds are louder
4). YouTube video sounds are louder

Test Experiment: (Thanks stlcaddie and ReVan)
If you want to see a difference download beatphone.app listen to the pads with the volume all the way up and then apply the modded files. Now go back to the beatphone.app and listen to how loud the pads are now.
Install Instructions:

1). Download this file: iPhone Volume Fix
UPDATED file: iPhone Volume Fix with softer dialpad
2). Copy the com.apple.celestial.plist file to /var/root/Library/Preferences (Delete the two files FIRST don’t just copy them onto the phone and select the option of overwrite.)
3). Copy the SystemSoundMaximumVolume.plist file to /System/Library/Frameworks/Celestial.framework/
4). Goto Settings > iPod > (switch off: Sound Check)
5). Reboot your iPhone.

UPDATE: If you do not notice a difference try:

1). Download

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1SHSE3IF

put it into: private/var/preferences

2.) Reboot

I followed the instructions exactly and I can say absolutely that there was no difference in the volume for either YouTube videos or my iPod music. I am very disappointed. I always thought the volume for iPod music and YouTube videos . I was so excited when I read this posting that said volume can be increased. I downloaded the two plist files as referenced and then used iBrickr to copy the files into the correct folder on the iPhone. I switched the iPod Sound Check setting to off. I then rebooted my phone. I checked several YouTube video and iPod songs. No increase in volume could be heard. Sad. I then repeated the procedure once again. No change. Sad. Thanks anyway.

did you notice a difference with beatphone.app?

  • 7 Limited Edition iPhoneNo Gravatar // Oct 12, 2007 at 7:55 am

I also have used this edited file, but I don’t think that will make a difference for you but try it anyways

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1SHSE3IF

    put it into: private/var/preferences

  • 8 Computer UserNo Gravatar // Oct 14, 2007 at 1:58 am

First, thanks very much to Limited Edition iPhone for the response and for the additional file to try.

I did not test my iPhone volume with that “beatphone.app” method before I copied those two files to my iPhone.

I did copy to my iPhone that com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist file to the private/var/preferences … You were right. Still no difference in my volume level.

I truly wanted an increase in my iPhone’s volume, and I appreciate the effort. Again, I tried many songs and YouTube videos.

I have a Nokia 6267 Phone with T-Mobile service. The volume is very loud (with the same songs I also have on my iPhone). It is interesting how Nokia can make phones with much louder volume on their tiny speaker over what the maker of the iPhone has done.

  • 9 Limited Edition iPhoneNo Gravatar // Oct 14, 2007 at 11:05 am

I know the speakers are the biggest disappointment for me on the iPhone as well. Even with the volume fix my volume is low but its a little bit louder than it was.

  • 10 Computer UserNo Gravatar // Oct 14, 2007 at 2:19 pm

Thanks again for the reply. I wanted to add one more thing. Before I uploaded the com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist file you suggested above, I first copied the original file off my iPhone. I then opened up in Windows Notepad the original file and the newer file so I could compare the code. Both files are identical in every way. So, this is why there was no difference in my volume level, concerning just that specific file.

In general, I think we all just need to accept our existing iPhones as they are now and wait excitedly for Apple’s next version (iPhone 2). With luck, the next iPhone (hopefully out in 2008) will have both 3G AND a much better speaker. Apple might even put in the ability to record video. But at the least, I think if iPhone 2 has 3G and a louder speaker (maybe stereo speakers?), the phone will sell a lot more and people like you and me will be much happier.

  • 11 Limited Edition iPhoneNo Gravatar // Oct 14, 2007 at 6:13 pm

the SystemSoundMaximumVolume.plist and com.apple.celestial.plist were different than your originals correct? Have you already updated to 1.1.1?

  • 12 Computer UserNo Gravatar // Oct 14, 2007 at 9:35 pm

You know, I did not check the code of the two original files I replaced (sorry I did not do that now). I only checked that last file you suggested. (But I’m sure the code was different on those two files.)

My iPhone is 1.02. I did not upgrade to 1.11 because I did not want a bricked iPhone. (My iPhone is “Jailbroken,” so I could install 3rd Party Apps. My iPhone is not SIM unlocked. I am waiting for the geniuses out there to release a way for 1.02 iPhones to be easily upgraded, without having to go through the difficult task of downgrading from 1.11 back to 1.02 so then one can successfully upgrade back. Whew! I follow all the iPhone developments intently, and daily. As you know, the only things I am missing with 1.11 is iTunes Store and the ability to press the spacebar twice to have a period inserted.)

  • 13 Computer UserNo Gravatar // Oct 14, 2007 at 9:52 pm

    One more thing…

I forgot to say thank you for posting, way back in September, the fix for restoring YouTube on “Jailbroken” iPhones. I used your site and your posting to get my YouTube working via WiFi. Bravo! And many thanks. I’m sure you take pleasure in knowing that your postings really do help and are appreciated.

i did note a louder volume with this upgrade. but it also increased the phone dialpad key-tone sounds also which is realy annoying. i tried to restore to original files but no change. does anyone know how to turn off dialpad key sounds?

  • 16 Limited Edition iPhoneNo Gravatar // Oct 15, 2007 at 6:47 am

I will put up a file with a softer dialpad in a few hours

  • 17 Computer UserNo Gravatar // Oct 15, 2007 at 11:13 am

Success. Small volume increase. Thank you. OK, when I first did this I used iBrickr, which as everyone knows is for Windows. iBrickr does not have a feature (at least where I could find) where you can delete the files off the iPhone first. iBrickr just simply overwrites the files.

Then, following LimitedEditioniPhone’s new advice of deleting the files first, I went over to my Mac. I used iFuntastic, which does include a feature where you can delete the files from your iPhone.

I now can hear an increase in the volume. A big thank you yet again to LimitedEditioniPhone.com.

  • 18 iLauncherNo Gravatar // Oct 15, 2007 at 12:01 pm

hi, i too have used this fix but as Computer User said…i too have windows and was only able to overwrite the files onto my iPhone using iBrickr and couldnt delete them first. so can anyone firstly tell me whether it makes a difference if u overwrite the files instead of deleting them 1st and then copying them? secondly, if yes, then how to do that with Windows+iBrickr coz i dont have a mac. finally, i did notice a huge change in the dialpad tones but not (or very very little) difference in the speakerphone volume. but the receiver volume is still very very low. i have used the volume increase button on the left of the iphone during a call but the volume didnt increase. i tried the volume decrease button too just to ensure that the buttons r indeed working, and it did lower the volume even further confirming that the buttons are working.
    so can anyone plz help?
    thanx.

  • 19 Limited Edition iPhoneNo Gravatar // Oct 15, 2007 at 2:11 pm

the iPhone has a poor speaker and the volume for the speakerphone is just slightly louder with the fix. To update files on your phone with windows xp or vista it is best to use winscp. You will need to install bsd subsystem and open ssh from installer onto your phone and then download winscp and login to your phone. It is file manager. I can write up a better guide on the process. Just give me a bit of time.

  • 23 Limited Edition iPhoneNo Gravatar // Oct 16, 2007 at 3:20 pm

This is still developmental and we are trying to find the perfect volumes. Now that Anysim 1.1 is released it may not be a bad idea to just update to firmware 1.1.1 where apple has fixed the volume issue.

  • 24 Computer UserNo Gravatar // Oct 16, 2007 at 7:20 pm

    Hi LimitedEditioniPhone,

Do you know the answer to this: If one buys a new iPhone with 1.1.1 and then uses the new 1.1.1 Jailbreak of even AnySim, will the YouTube feature work? (As you know, since you helped fix the YouTube Not Working Problem by posting links to the fix, YouTube didn’t work over WiFi when one “Jailbroke” the original iPhone.)

    Thank you very much.

  • 28 CromagNo Gravatar // Oct 21, 2007 at 5:56 pm

I made the mistake of upgrading a virgin 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 before attempting the unlock. After going through the downgrade and re-upgrading using Independence 1.2.3, I unlocked the phone using AnySIM 1.1 (Get-Info says v. 1.0, though). Now the phone volume is really low.

Is this fix going to work for me? If so, what’s the process of copying the audio files over? I’m on Mac OSX.

    Thanks for any help!

  • 29 MauriceNo Gravatar // Oct 22, 2007 at 8:32 am

I feel so stupid. My Iphone had a very low volume too with the 1.1.1 firmware. Guess what……i removed the transparent “out of the factory” plastic and now i had to turn the volume down !!!

  • 30 RAGNo Gravatar // Oct 22, 2007 at 11:31 pm

That’s true. That company manufactured plastic is killing the volume. Remove it 0r cut the plastic around receiver end. Everything will be fine after that. :)

    where to put softer dialpad

  • 33 Leng HongNo Gravatar // Oct 24, 2007 at 8:38 am

I noticed the iPhone replaces “com.apple.audio…” file” in private/var/preferences, as soon as I reboot.

    where to place volume.rar?

  • 34 Limited Edition iPhoneNo Gravatar // Oct 24, 2007 at 8:53 am

you need to extract volume.rar with winrar

  • 35 AlexNo Gravatar // Oct 24, 2007 at 10:56 pm

    volume.rar?
    I don’t have any volume.rar
btw, the com.apple.radio file also resets here, doe’s that matter?

  • 36 Limited Edition iPhoneNo Gravatar // Oct 25, 2007 at 6:44 am

UPDATED file: iPhone Volume Fix with softer dialpad
2). Copy the com.apple.celestial.plist file to /var/root/Library/Preferences (Delete the two files FIRST don’t just copy them onto the phone and select the option of overwrite.)
    3). Copy the SystemSoundMaximumVolume.plist file to /System/Library/Frameworks/Celestial.framework/
4). Goto Settings > iPod > (switch off: Sound Check)
    5). Reboot your iPhone.

Really thats all you need to do to have the best volume on a 1.02 phone. Now that their is a virginizer out I would recommend upgrading to 1.1.1

  • 37 Leng HongNo Gravatar // Oct 25, 2007 at 11:10 am

    I put “com.apple.celestial.plist” and “Volume fix.rar” in /var/root/Library/Preferences

    and

    “SystemSoundMaximumVolume.plist” file to /System/Library/Frameworks/Celestial.framework

    The Volume is fix.

However the dialpad is very loud now. How to lower it to normal level?

I have also put “com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist” into
    private/var/preferences

Result were: Loud Volume and Loud Dialer

I wish to lower Dialer and make it softer, is it possible and how?

    Hey guys,

Don’t have to upgrade. I had the same problem when my iphone had very low volume and the speaker would not even work when playing the ipod without the ear phone. All i did was, hold down the power button and the volume button (the top one that increases the volume) held it till the phone asked me to slide to power off. while still holding both power button and volume button, used my second hand to slide the power off button. I realesed the buttons but noticed that the iphone would not go off quickly and the screen was blank. waited for a bit and believed it was doing something which it actually did. it finally powered off and when i tried powering it up again it would not come on, waited for 3 mins then tried again. it came on and i tried the ipod on it and the speaker was functioning and pretty loud. using the ear phone with it was even better, its now louder than any phone i have ever had. lol! hope this helps but at your own risks!! any questions email me at muyizo@yahoo.co.uk. cheers guys.

well i had the same problem, fantastic phone, used garage band to make ring tones from my own songs, and they are automatically imported into the ring tone section of itunes, which is a great, my only problem was i could barely hear anyone when i received a call, found this posting here, thought , plastics what a load of @£$%^& but i tried it any way, and what do you know, the volume on my iphone is great, so there is something in the it, but for some other people there is with out doubt a fault with some of the iphones released
