UPDATE 3: I have fixed the fixed the first link. I will see what is going on with the second, it just re-routes you to one of my posts, don’t use it.
UPDATE 2: Alright everyone, this is important. I have created a signed Mobile Configuration file and have also made a signed .ipcc file for all of you on AT&T. Enjoy!
Carrier Update, download, then apply in iTunes. This is exclusively for AT&T GoPhone customers
Mobile Configuration Profile, just open the Link in Safari by taping here, then install.
If the mobile configuration file I made doesn’t install right away, try my .ipcc. Also, tell me about any issues you may encounter and I will try to see what’s up.
Also, if you have any other carrier that isn’t AT&T, then continue using the external website I provided. Enjoy!
(These downloads are exclusively from Limited Edition iPhone, do not redistribute without permission, and only link to this page or to the file itself.)
UPDATE 1: Hey guys, it seems that our friends at Gizmodo have also found this to be an issue. Well, they have not found a solution, lucky for you, we are freaking monsters up here at Limited Edition iPhone, and I found a workaround in like 60 seconds, so prepaid gophone customers, I’ve got your backs! Oh, and AT&T… F*ck you! Apple, dump them, they are not helping you, but rather dragging you down and giving you a bad name.
Today I recieved a text message from AT&T to tell me about the 3.0 update on Wednesday, well my first reaction was, how the hell do they know that I have an iPhone if I didn’t activate my service on an iPhone (originally), but Mike said that possibly due to my IMEI, they knew I was on an iPhone 3G. Let me tell you a little story.
Well when I updated to 3.0 (7A341) on Tueday morning, everything seemed 100% fine. Activation went through perfectly and sync went great as well.
Well, I went to bed and when I woke up Wednesday morning, I decided that I wanted to check my email and weather. So I tried and it gave me an error that read “Could not activate cellular data network: you are not subscribed to a cellular data service”.
Weird huh? Well I though, oh maybe I should reset all network settings, so I did, but to my surprise, it had no effect! So then I decided that maybe Apple had screwed up and accidentally typed in the wrong APN, since the new bundle was AT&T 4.0, instead of the previous AT&T 3.5. So I decided it was time to correct their issue. Little did I know back then that this was 100% intentional. Which AT&T now confirmed was intentional to get prepaid customers to switch to a post paid plan.
My method does not require a jailbreak. I am not jailbroken right now as there will be no public jailbreak until after 3.0 is released to the masses. I made a mobile configuration file for my iPhone 3G in order to change my APN. It is much safer than a custom .ipcc or a manual change. (due to human error of course, and its easier to apply, no iTunes needed to apply it.)
So what you need to do is download a program called “iPhone Configuration Utility”. Its a free download from Apple.com.
There is a very serious issue though. It seems that Apple has not updated their utility so that you can connect an iPhone 3.0 device to it and apply a configuration file directly via USB. You can however email it to yourself and then tap on it on your iPhone to activate and install the new configuration file.
Set the APN to:
APN: wap.cingular
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Now export the .mobileconfig file via an e-mail and email it to yourself. Now go to your Mail application on your iPhone and open the message you mailed yourself, now, tap on the attachment and install the file!
Or, I guess, if you want… you can go to a website and bypass the long installation/creation process explained by my previous method. Just go to
http://www.unlockit.co.nz/#_Custom
on your iPhone, now just enter the apn data that I provided above where the website indicates. Just copy and paste it in. (or you can tap on the selector, the thing that says “blank”, the thing that is under the APN inputs, and select your carrier.) Now just tap on “create custom profile” and then it will exit Safari, and take you to the settings application. Now just tap on “install” and you are done. (Installing a profile may take up to 30 seconds, do not exit the menu until it is done installing or you will have a very corrupted carrier file.
There you go! Now you have full 3G and EDGE capabilities. This took me about a minute to figure out that it was an issue with the APN information Apple provided in the AT&T 4.0 bundle. So I used a method that I used to use to prevent data usage and just did the opposite and re-enabled data usage.
This is 100% safe! Just make sure you type the APN correctly and you should be fine. Just reboot after you have done this if you still don’t have a connection. I didn’t need to reboot, but you know, just in case. Don’t forget to spread te word and tell everybody you know that has a GoPhone Prepaid iPhone so that they can have uninterrupted service.

WhenI say upgrade to 3.00I mean the apple issued upgrade that gives us the same software on the new iPhones. My iPhone got bricked so I was forced to restore. When I restored that takes away the “jailbreak”. So then I applied the 3.0 upgrade from Apple issued through i-tunes. After this upgrade my wifi did not work correctly because Apple purposely did this to prevent those like us with “jailbroken” iPhones from using that data applications such as safari. To hopefully force us to sign a contract, which isnt gonna happen. I did some research and found this site http://unlockit.co.nz/ Visit this site from your iPhone to change your APN settings. Maybe even visit it from your pc to help you with the instructions. Its easy and takes like 2 mins tops. At first, I wasnt impressed only bc my wifi signal was VERY weak and I would be standing next to my router. However, the following night I found that it picked up a strong signal. So the “unlockit” method worked at least for now. How I connected in McDonalds the other day? I really dont know. But as soon as it did I followed that method and its been working fine since then. I do know that the connection was through a wifi service provided by AT&T and only provided for those with iPhones wanting to use wifi. They also had a different connection for those without iPhones thast wanted to use the wifi there. They asked for my phone # then sent a link via text to connect. It didnt work I had them send a link like 4 times to finally connect. Im not sure if this can help any of you, but I hope so. Thanks

Yes, go to another wifi network and connect. With your iPhones browser go to http://unlockit.co.nz/ Then follow the instructions. It will bring you to a screen where it says APN username and password and all that but just go to select carrier and choose U.S. AT&T and it will fill all that in for you. Then hit next, save, or whatever it is for you to continue. (I have a bad memory…lol) This will then save a profile under Settings> General> Profile. You should then see “APN Carrier Settings” if applied correctly. Now if it doesnt work great at first, dont get down. Mine took till the next day to give me a good connection to my router. Let me know what happens. Thanks

IS THERE A WAY TO GET THIS TO WORK ON ROGERS?????????????!!!!?????????
if you dont know let me know if you know anybody that might
Jonathan // Jul 23, 2009 at 7:56 AM
Wes, to be honest im not completely sure what rogers is. However, the method I listed above has more than one carrier listing so its not just AT&T people that can use that method. Im not sure if “rogers” is a carrier of some sort, but if it is, you have a good chance of it being listed. The only step that would be different for you is when the screen appears and asks for your APN username, password, etc., instead of selecting AT&T from the list, obviously select rogers if thasts your carrier. Im not sure if this works, so please forgive me if Im wrong. I will do some research for you and see what I can come up with if you want. Thanks
Wes // Jul 23, 2009 at 8:33 AM
It’s Canadas AT&T, they overcharge because they have a manopoly, actually they used to be Rogers/AT&T up untill a couple of year, I guess it’s true Americans know nothing about Canada except we have hockey, beer, and really hot womens, just out curiosity do you know where New Brunswick is and whether or not it’s city or province( without cheating I.e google)
Wes // Jul 23, 2009 at 8:50 AM
If you could do some reaseech that would be great, sorry about my rant
Alan Vazquez // Jul 23, 2009 at 9:09 AM
Wes: Don’t accuse everyone of being ignorant. I know plenty about Canada because I have ben in French 1-4, I have learned a lot about it, and on the iPhone scene, I also know about Rogers, we have covered Rogers activity before
Also, don’t get mad, there are some ignorant people out there, just show em who’s boss by revealing that you know more things than they do.
Jonathan // Jul 23, 2009 at 10:19 AM
Wes: Believe it or not im only 19, and I have done alot of travel. Mostly only the southern states of the U.S. from North Carolina to California. No, I have never been to Canada. And yes, I know very little about Canada. I didnt know you had hot women… (lol… jk) But I do know that I wrote you to try and help you with your problem because I was able to fix the same problem on mine. I will see what I can figure out for you. I seriously recommend doing some research yourself. And im sure that if I cant help you, theres somebody that can.

Just wanted to say instead of going with the t-mobile sidekick plan I decided to go with pick your plan for att with unlimited data. I originally set up a pay as you go with 100mb of data but that was not enough, so I called up att and told them I wanted to switch to pick your plan for the iphone with unlimited data. The first 2 reps I talked to said they are not allowed dealing with new accounts on iphone on prepaid and said I had to setup a contract on post paid. Well I called back and guess I got the right rep and she set it all up so now I get unlimited 3g speeds so if anyone was wondering about it well you can still do it but you might have to talk to a few people for it to work.

Alan –
Dude, you are THE MAN!!! Thanks so much for the help! I was about to give up hope on ever getting internet on my iphone again. I too use a prepaid sim and ran into the same problem.
Couple of questions for you or anyone on here:
1. What is the best jailbreak prog for 3.0 (I’ve always wanted to jailbreak mine).
2. I saw on the net somewhere that the jailbreak prog allows you to use the camera as a video camera. Is this true, if so which one?
Thanks again and in advance for answering my noob quetions.

ALAN,
THANK YOU! i just got a GOPHONE sim from ATT today and called them up about my service being awful, (in the middle of boston) and the guy started talking about att shutting prepaid off iphones and blah blah and saying i am lucky to be able to even make a call form it, soon i realized edge didnt work and paniked. thanks to you i got edge working though! i seriously intensely appreciate this!. im using a 2G btw.
i have a question for you though, is their anything possible to do regarding my service? because i i mentioned i live in boston, A huge city where coverage is great, yet my phone has only seen 1 or 2 miniscule bars of service. any suggestions? i understand if not because this is a totally different issue.
Ben Miller // Jul 24, 2009 at 3:58 AM
I just bought a cheap go phone tonight and activated it with a pay as you go plan. When I try to use that sim card in my Iphone 3G it keeps saying “No Service” but I can use my work phone’s contract sim in the phone and it works fine. Any ideas why it wont work in my Iphone?
I am running a Jailbroken,Unlocked Iphone 3G using the 3.0 software.
Thanks
Ben
nastynate69 // Jul 24, 2009 at 5:53 AM
I hate to be of bad news ben but att new gophone that come with an automatic 15 dollar credit they lock that sim card that came with the phone to that phone. The same thing happened to me when I set up a pay as you go and popped it into my 3gs and said no service. Well I luckily had an extra sim card around and said I lost mine and they activated the new sim and had no more service issues. The sim card that comes with gophones now are locked to that imei for 120 days unfortunatly another one of att brilliant moves, so if you want you could buy a sim on ebay for 5 dollars and call up att and say you lost your sim and have them activate the new sim and you could use it in your iphone hope this helps.
YeahYeah // Jul 24, 2009 at 7:08 AM
Ok so i got a 3g iphone acitvated on a PYP 2g unlimted data plan. When i do a speed test im getting 250-350 kpbs download. Is the 3g data plan throttled on the 3g? Is this on ATT side or becuse of the 3.0 update?
nastynate69 // Jul 24, 2009 at 7:47 AM
YeahYeah it all depends on what area you are in. Some areas are not as good 3g coverage hence the slow speeds it varies but it is still a lot faster than edge thats for sure. I have a question how exactly did you det up a pyp 2g unlimited data on iphone 3g? Do you have a spare iphone 2g around or something did you have to call att or set it up in itunes cause they gave me all kinds of trouble but luckily I got a good rep who finally set it up I didnt even have an iphone 2g I just told them I did I am actually using an iphone 3gs with unlimited data now.

Hey Greg
What i get from your saying , Is that when u restore & plug in , itunes detects & asking you to activate with ATT? If that so , then just cancel & close the Itunes . After that use the quickpwn or red snow … any other software to put the new OS in iphone .

Hello everyone,
I never ask for help because usually, I am able to comeplete my task thanks to original topics and other peoples question, but I am officially stumped.
I have tried everything, I’ve jailbroken, restored, changed APN, changed .IPCC, and everything else you guys have suggested and I still get no service.
I have had my iphone since Jan. and at the time, I had the contract, but after some time I wasn’t able to pay the bill anymore so I had it turnedoff. But a month ago, I decided I would get a GoiPhone and I went out and bought a20 dollar nokia phone fromwal-mart, activated it, and put the sim card into my iphone and did everything suggested. But to no avail.
So if anyone could help me, or point me into the right direction. It would be greatly appreciated.

Now what?
Thanks.

You guys should really consider switching to the T-Mobile Sidekick plan
$1 a day = unlimited text and data
$.15 a minute
90 day expiration*
and 1 year deactivation*
(*I think)
I actually found this post trying to keep my GoPhone account alive but wound up switching to T-Mobile. Best thing I ever did.

@Vik Hey…I restore without my SIM card and as soon as I insert it-I get the plug-into iTunes lock on my iPhone…when I plug it into iTunes, it wants to activate my phone.
So you’re saying, try to jailbreak it? I was thinking that and tried red sn0w-it locks up at reboot.

I want to thank Alan and everyone else here wholeheartedly !!!!!!!!! I have a paid ATT Bold unlimited plan and purchased a jailbroken Iphone (3G os 3.0) off of ebay. I switched the sims (which I plan to do on a regular basis for work/personal use) and although my new Iphone would make calls I couldn’t get data. After hours of searching and googling I came across this forum and just kept reading. I hooked up to my wifi at home and went to the link provided here to change the APN and VOILA!!!!! All up and running!!! I am SOOOOOOOOOO happy! THANK YOU AGAIN !
p.s. ‘ see a lot of info re: att’s handling of htose of us who do this sim swapping so I’ll check back in after a bit and give a report.

I’ve been telling people to use the iPhone configuration utility on Apples site. When I would apply the ippc here and reboot the iPhone, there would be a strange character inserted that wasn’t there before the reboot. The configuration utility worked the first time.
It’s nice to know I can still use my GoPhone sim + data when I need it.

I have a year left on my contract but I want to cancel it and do gophone because i almost never use any minutes or data, but still may want some data on the go. Also, anyone know if the APN changes can be made manually on a jailbroken phone with the ‘APN editing’ app?
